Beanpot Hockey Tournament is first held.

Harvard beats Boston University 7-4 before 3,382 to win the first championship at Boston Arena. Originally the New England Invitational, the tournament includes the four Boston colleges with major men’s hockey programs. It opened the night before with Boston University beating Northeastern 4-1 in the first game and Harvard beating Boston College 3-2 in overtime in the second. The tournament moves to January and Boston Garden in 1954,* switches to February in 1955, and is played on the first and second Monday nights beginning in February in 1958 , and annually thereafter, except when canceled due to the COVID-19 virus in 2021.
